As an immigrant, Alan's father attended San Francisco City College's culinary program, allowing him to become a union hotel cook and the sole provider for his family for over two decades.

Alan took City College classes himself as a teenager, making use of the low-income tuition waiver that eventually helped him to graduate from U.C. San Diego at just 19 years old.
